Family and Youth Engagement in System Development

A strong family voice, as represented through family organizations, contributes to the development of effective systems of care. In an effective system of care, family-run organizations are adequately funded and supported to develop and sustain a diverse
group of families who collectively and effectively are the "family voice" in shaping their community's response to children with mental health needs and their families. Key elements for family-run organizations described in the Quick Guide for Self-Assessment of Family-Run Organizations in Systems of Care (Lazear, Anderson, & Boterf, 2007)* include:

  • Values
  • Leadership Development
  • Partnerships
  • Access and Referrals
  • Meeting Family Needs
  • Productive Working Relationships
  • Sustainability and Growth
  • Youth Involvement

Family and youth engagement in system development should also be represented in system of care logic models. This may be in the overall system logic model as a model that details specific family or youth involvement strategies. Examples of these two types of models can be viewed by clicking on the links below:

  • Youth Level
